Beads for embroidery and beading

Beads have decorated clothing for thousands of years – first as currency and amulets, later as the shimmer on a couture gown. In hand embroidery they still do the same work: they add light, texture and dimension that thread alone cannot give.

Here we gather the glass beads used in Luneville and needle embroidery: Czech glass pearls in 2, 3, 4 and 6 mm, faceted bicones, bugle beads, dagger and petal shapes, dragon scale beads and seed beads. Most of them come from Czech and French makers who have been producing them for generations, so sizing and colour stay consistent between batches – important when a design needs hundreds of identical beads.

How embroiderers use them

Beads are attached to organza, silk, tulle, wool or felt with a tambour hook or a fine needle. They fill motifs, outline shapes, create gradients and add weight to fringes and tassels. On evening and bridal wear they are often combined with sequins and purl; on bags, shoes and jewellery they work on their own.
