Appletons Crewel Wool

Appletons crewel wool

Appletons has been spinning embroidery wool in England since the nineteenth century, and its crewel yarn is still the reference for crewelwork, needlepoint and canvas work.

Why embroiderers choose it

The yarn is fine, evenly spun and strong enough to be pulled through linen twill hundreds of times without fraying. Because it is sold in a very wide range of shades, colours can be blended gradually – the reason Jacobean designs look painted rather than stitched.

Working with wool

Use short lengths – about 45 cm – and a crewel or chenille needle sized to the ground fabric. One strand is usual for fine shading; two or three fill larger areas. For needlepoint the strand count depends on the canvas gauge.
